NOW achieves a significant milestone in 2026 – we are ten years old! Since the first meeting in a coffee shop in 2016, NOW has gone from strength to strength in its mission of forging relationships with local businesses whilst giving back to the community.

As part of our celebrations, at our recent AGM, we asked some members who have been there from (almost) the start – Terry Harrison, Michelle O’Hara, Lindy Diacaris and Allie Coutts – to reflect what they’ve learnt and what they’ve gained from their involvement with NOW.

The first question asked was what motivated them to join NOW. Their circumstances at the time of joining were different – they had moved back to the area or started a new business, but they all said they wanted to find a local network to connect with other local businesses. What kept them coming back was that they felt part of a community.

When asked to select highlights from the last 10 years, specific events were mentioned, like the fundraising Gala in 2023 which raised $46,000 for Downs Syndrome Queensland, or the many Bunnings Sausage Sizzles. But the highlight that came up repeatedly was the social aspect of NOW: meeting people from all walks of life; waving to a familiar face when they were out shopping; the true friendships that had developed; and the support received during tough times. Everyone agreed that the best part of NOW and what set it apart from other business networks was how it enabled them to give back to the community. Also business happened – people did business together; shared business contacts; shared business experiences and learned from each other.

Another question was about what, if anything, surprised them about NOW. The response was not so much about the connections made but the depth of those connections. Another observation was they felt their voice was heard and acted on, which helped develop their confidence. Another long-term member, Sonia Partlett, commented that her children were active in their own communities, based on the example set by her involvement with NOW.

One thing that everyone agreed on was that NOW had become a priority in their lives. Making it to the monthly meetings was a “non-negotiable” because the deep connections they have in the group recharged them and fills their soul.

Everyone is looking ahead to see how NOW will evolve and continue to explore avenues to make a bigger difference. Traditionally, the gemstone that marks a 10-year wedding anniversary is diamond, signifying enduring love and commitment. I think NOW is and will always be in its diamond year.
